Welcome to Season 8

We're kicking off season 8 with a look at some really stupid scammers, then come back by asking if victims can ever really get justice.

The news is back with some changes and we'll be taking several dives into how AI is being used by scammers and con artists.

Plus, beginning this season, you'll be able to text me with your comments, questions or anything that's on your mind. I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for listening!

[00:00:00] Season 8 of Scams and Cons begins January 6th. And Season 8 will be great. I'm kicking off the season with a bit of laughter. I'm not saying scams and cons are funny, but the people who try to pull them off really step into it sometimes. It's a good way to start

[00:00:24] off a new year. The next full episode takes us straight back to serious. I'm asking if victims of con artists could ever really get justice. You can probably guess the answer, but probably not the why of it. As we go through the season, we'll have stories on how scammers are using AI to build sucker lists, and how deepfakes are

[00:00:53] going so far as to put a real live person on your doorstop to collect what they've convinced you has owed them. And that's just a few of the stories I'm anxious to share with you. And we'll continue with Scams and Cons news, but I

[00:01:13] must admit I bit off more than I could chew. This podcast is a one-person operation. Trying to do weekly news episodes along with the regular episodes was just too much. So I'm cutting it back to news on the first and third Thursdays, and regular

[00:01:34] episodes on the second and fourth Thursdays. Next, advertising is gone, at least for now. Very few podcasts make money, and those that do don't make much. I made less than $1,000 in my

[00:02:01] experiment, and that's well below the cost of producing scams and cons. I see no point in annoying you with ads when there isn't much gain in it. That said, I'm asking you to support the podcast via Patreon. If you're not familiar with Patreon, it's a simple process. You promised to

[00:02:27] kick in a few bucks a month and I put that toward the podcast. It can cost you as little as $3 a month. And at higher levels, I have other nifty goodies. With enough generous listeners, we'll be able to bring you even better content. It's a small ask, and I greatly appreciate your support. But it's not all gloom and doom. I've got some surprises to add as the season moves along, but they'll have to wait on some other things to fall into place first. Thanks for listening,

[00:02:56] and let's have a great 2025! Bye!
