In a recent incident, a man from Redding, CA., was apprehended for running a scam across the state, as reported by the Redding Police Department.

A man was found to be exploiting a fabricated military persona to deceive people and businesses for financial gain.

The person taken into custody would don a mix of U.S. Navy and U.S. Army attire, complete with rank insignias, and approach local businesses armed with an outdated photograph of his disabled son, which was over twenty years old. He would then manipulate the staff into giving him money.

A notable red flag for such deceptive activities is highlighted in the video above, which outlines five signs of a scam call before you even answer the phone. Despite having served in the U.S. Navy at one point the man exaggerated the duration of his service when conning his targets. He confessed to carrying out this scheme across multiple counties in California.

The Redding Police Department shared this detail in a Facebook post, emphasizing the officers' role in recognizing the fraudulent uniform. As a result of his actions, Curtis was charged with grand theft and for the misrepresentation of military service and uniforms, with the intent to impersonate and deceive for monetary gain. This case serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and informed about the potential for scams, especially those involving the exploitation of military service.
