The people stealing houses in Montgomery County, Va., have not been backing trucks up to the foundation and hauling them away. They just take over the deed without the homeowner’s knowledge.
The Montgomery County Recorder told WKEF, they see a number of quitclaim scams happening in the county. One woman learned that con artists filed the claim and ownership of her property in 2010. She didn’t know about it until 2023. The person who filed the quitclaim deed died in 2017.
The television station said the woman got a notice stating that she owed $13,000 in taxes on the property. She is now working to figure out the status of her property.
